What’s a She-Shed and how can you create one?
The original concept of a Man Cave was a safe haven for men to escape daily life while comforting in their favorite things. It was only a matter of time before a woman realized she needed her own escape. Thus, the She-Shed came to be.
These havens can be small and feminine, large and funky, or quaint and low-key. The setting depends on the woman. Regardless, a She-Shed is a place where a woman can let down her hair while letting her personality and creativity run free. So, once you’ve decided you want your very own She-Shed, how do you get started?
1. Find the right space
The first step to creating your perfect sanctuary is finding the location for it. Do you have an outpost of your house that’s currently wasting space? Or do you want the room somewhere in your home? If you want your She-Shed inside your house you have a few different options:
- Garage: The garage would require the most remodeling/redecorating, and you might have to share space with a car, but it has the potential to become the perfect hideaway.
- Walk-in closet: Although one of the smaller sized options, a walk-in closet would give you the seclusion and comfort you’re seeking – and it might spur creativity.
- Spare bedroom or office: The downside to a spare bedroom is lack of seclusion, but the upside is that most of the decorating has already been done. Plus, you might even get an attached bathroom.
2. Choose a theme
Once you have space, next you’ll need a theme. Your She-Shed is the one space you have to express exactly who you are and what you love. What do you want your room to define?
Some women base their themes on their hobbies. For example, if you like to paint you can add small, local artwork to the walls and set up your own little painting den. If you love to read, you can fill a wall with a bookcase stocked with your favorite books and consider painting book quotes on the walls. Overall, let your passion and personality shine through in your decorations.
3. Make it your own
If your She-Shed is going to be a place for you to read or write, you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of lighting. If you want the room for meditation and relaxation, you’ll want plenty of cushions and comfy chairs, long drapes and pastel colors. Whatever it is, it’s for you!
Lately, there’s not a massive difference in price between a two-bedroom and three-bedroom home. If you happen to decide on a new home with an extra room, take advantage of the extra space with your very own She-Shed.
