Naples is so much more than just a beach town
If you do an online image search for Naples, Florida, the majority of the pictures that come up will be beach-related. You’ll see people swimming, sunbathing, and frolicking on the sand, as well as numerous beachside homes and hotels. And while Naples is home to some of the most spectacular beaches you’ll find anywhere, there is a lot more to the city and the surrounding area than many people know. If you’re looking for things to do that don’t involve bathing suits or sunscreen, we’ve got you covered.
Theater
There are numerous places around Naples to see live theater, and if you want to see world-class performances, Artis–Naples should be at the top of your list. Every year the theater showcases plays and musicals straight from Broadway. Their 2018-19 season includes “The Sound of Music,” “Les Misérables,” and “School of Rock.” Oh, and if you’ve perhaps heard of a little show called “Hamilton,” that’s coming to the Artis–Naples in early 2020.
To see some excellent local actors tread the boards, you’ll want to check out The Naples Players. This community theater is celebrating its 65th anniversary and puts on several productions throughout the year. It also has a children’s theater program. Downtown Naples will also soon be home to a beautiful new theater. The 56,000-square-foot Gulfshore Playhouse – expected to open next year – will feature a 400-seat main stage.
Museums
It’s only fitting that one of the most picturesque locations in the world is home to several museums and galleries. The Baker Museum is renowned for its permanent collection of modern and contemporary art, as well as its ever-changing exhibitions.
If history and culture are your things, Naples also doesn’t disappoint in this area. There are five Collier County Museums that offer a wonderful glimpse back in time and feature artifacts from Native Americans and the first pioneers.
Comedy
Perhaps now more than ever, we could all use a laugh, and Naples has several spots for you to get your chuckle on. Square One Improv offers one-of-a-kind shows twice every month at the Naples Performing Arts Center. The Laugh In Comedy Café in Fort Myers features some of the hottest comedians from around the country. Another great spot to see funny people is the Off The Hook Comedy Club, which also offers a full dinner menu with every performance.
Music
Artis–Naples has made the list again! Not only is the Naples Philharmonic here but you can also find internationally renowned guest artists joining them on the stage.
Want to hear some great live music? Several bars and restaurants in and around Naples showcase fantastic local and touring musicians. If you’re looking to grab a drink and shake a leg, you will want to take a trip to the Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, which has a 4,500-square-foot dance floor.
For some of the biggest musical acts from around the U.S. and the world, the Southwest Florida Event Center is the place to be. Upcoming acts include Los Lobos, Wayne Newton, and Sister Hazel. The Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall on the campus of Florida Southwestern State College also puts on big-name concerts, as well as Broadway-style musicals.
